  • Why does the controller trip on “phase loss” when I know all phases are present?
  • Phase loss detection often works by monitoring the line synchronization signal or by comparing currents. Possible causes: A blown fuse on one phase (even if the line is live, the controller sees no current or missing voltage zero-cross). Loose connection or an auxiliary contact that is not closed. High distortion on the mains causing misdetection. Adjust the phase loss sensitivity if the feature is configurable.
  • How can I test an SCR module with a multimeter?
  • Caution: Disconnect all power first.A basic diode test can identify a shorted SCR but not always a failed-open unit. Measure resistance: Between anode and cathode (power terminals) in both directions – should read high resistance (open) in both polarities. Between gate and cathode – a low-resistance diode junction should be present (tens of ohms) in one direction.If you find a short (near zero ohms) between anode and cathode, the SCR is defective. For a reliable full-load test, an oscilloscope and a current probe are recommended.
  • The load is receiving power even when the setpoint is zero. Why?
  • Residual leakage current from the snubber network (RC circuit) can allow a few milliamps to flow, enough to make a sensitive voltmeter read a voltage. This is normal and does not deliver real power. In phase-angle mode, a minimum firing angle limit may be set to avoid output instability. Adjust the minimum limit parameter. Check for a damaged SCR (shorted), which would result in continuous conduction.
  • The SCR power controller does not deliver any output. What should I check?
  • Verify that the mains voltage is present on all phases. Check the semiconductor fuse(s) – an open fuse will block output. Confirm the setpoint signal (4–20 mA or voltage) is present and within range. Check that the Enable / Run input is active (usually a dry contact closure). Look for any alarm states (over-temperature, phase loss) that might inhibit firing. Ensure the correct firing mode is selected (e.g., zero-cross for resistive, phase-angle for transformer loads).
  • What type of analog inputs do your controllers accept?
  • Most units accept standard process signals: 4–20 mA 0–10 V DC 0–5 V DC, 1–5 V DC Potentiometer (typically 10 kΩ)The input type is often selectable via DIP switches, jumpers, or software configuration.
  • Can I control several SCR power regulators from a single PLC?
  • Absolutely. Using Modbus RTU (RS-485 multi-drop), a single PLC master can address up to 247 units on the same bus. Each unit is assigned a unique slave ID. All operating parameters, setpoints, and alarms can be read and written over the network.
  • What communication interfaces are available?
  • Depending on the model, PIDMaxwell SCR power regulators can be equipped with: RS-485 with Modbus RTU (most common) Profibus DP Profinet EtherNet/IP CANopen (on request) Digital communication allows full remote parameterization, read-back of process values, and diagnostic status.
  • What cable type is recommended for the analog setpoint input (4–20 mA / 0–10 V)?
  • Use shielded twisted-pair cable (e.g., Belden 8760 or equivalent). Route it away from power cables, variable frequency drives, and sources of strong magnetic fields. The shield should be grounded at the controller end only.
  • Can I use a standard circuit breaker as the only upstream protection?
  • No. A standard circuit breaker is too slow to protect the SCRs. You must use the recommended semiconductor fuse in addition to any branch circuit protection. The fuse protects the SCR stack; the upstream circuit breaker provides wiring and installation protection.
  • How should I wire the power and control circuits?
  • Power wiring: Use properly sized cables for line, load, and ground. Keep them as short as possible. Separate power and control cables by at least 200 mm to avoid electromagnetic interference. Control wiring: Use shielded twisted-pair cables for analog setpoint and communication signals. Ground the shield only at one end (typically the controller side). Grounding: The SCR unit must be solidly connected to the safety earth (PE). The load’s metal frame must also be grounded. Always follow the installation diagrams in the specific product manual.
