  • What is an SCR power regulator and how does it work?
  • An SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) power regulator – also called a thyristor power controller – is a solid-state device that precisely controls the amount of AC power delivered to a load, usually an industrial heating element or transformer. It uses back-to-back SCRs or a TRIAC to rapidly switch the AC waveform. By varying the point in each half-cycle (phase-angle control) or the number of full cycles conducted (zero-cross/burst control), it adjusts the effective voltage, current, or power supplied to the load.

  • What maintenance is required?
  • SCR power controllers are essentially maintenance-free. Recommended periodic checks (e.g., annually): Tightness of all power terminal connections (re-torque if necessary). Cleanliness of heatsinks and fan filters – remove dust buildup. Functional test of the cooling fan and alarm contacts. Visual inspection of the snubber network and fuses. No routine replacement of internal components is needed under normal operating conditions.

  • What is the difference between constant current and constant power control?
  • Constant current (I² control): Maintains the RMS load current at the setpoint, compensating for changes in supply voltage but not for changes in load resistance. Constant power (true P control): Uses voltage and current measurements to compute real power (kW). It compensates for both line voltage fluctuations and resistance changes with temperature, delivering the most accurate heating result.
  • How can I minimize flicker on the power line when using burst-fire control?
  • Use a “soft start” burst mode that gradually increases the number of cycles over time, or select a “distributed burst” algorithm if available. This spreads the conducted cycles more evenly over time, reducing sub-harmonic components that cause visible lamp flicker. Alternatively, apply phase-angle control for the lowest flicker.
  • Can I parallel two SCR power controllers for higher current?
  • Direct paralleling of outputs is not recommended because small differences in trigger timing or device characteristics can cause current imbalance. Instead, use a single larger-rated controller or a specially designed master/slave system where precise synchronization is guaranteed.   • What causes a “Heater Break” alarm to trigger falsely?
  • False triggers can occur if: The load current is too low to be measured accurately (use a CT with appropriate ratio). The alarm threshold is set too close to the normal operating current, and slight mains variations cross it. In zero-cross mode with a very short cycle time, the current reading may fluctuate. Setting a small hysteresis or filter can help. For multiple parallel elements, ensure the detection threshold is set just below the expected current of the full array.
